How we compile the numbers
Every page on this site answers one question: what does this fee or job cost in the United States in 2026. Here is how the ranges are built, so you can decide how much to trust them.
Where the ranges come from
Each range is compiled from published cost guides (Angi, HomeAdvisor, HomeGuide, Modernize, RepairPal and others), trade pricing guides written for contractors (Housecall Pro, AutoLeap), company price pages (Safelite, Firestone, Pep Boys, dealer service pages), and government sources where a fee is set by law (the IRS mileage rate, state inspection programs, permit fee schedules, the EPA radon action level). Where sources disagree we publish the range most of them share and note the outliers on the page.
What most pay means
The wide range is the low and high a normal household could be quoted. The narrower band is where most quotes land. Emergency, after hours, big city and specialty work sit above it and are called out separately.
The estimators
Every estimator runs in your browser. It multiplies the job range by a state cost band (low 0.8, average 1.0, high 1.3) and a timing factor (after hours 1.75 where it applies). Nothing you type is sent anywhere. The contractor calculator on the service call pages uses burdened labor, drive time, the IRS mileage rate and a target margin; the formula is printed under it.
Updates
Pages carry the date they were last updated. Ranges are reviewed when a source publishes new data, when a rule changes (a state ending inspections, the IRS changing the mileage rate), and at least twice a year.
